Abyss is the POE 3.29 XP meta I'd pick for a level push before chasing flashy loot setups. A fast City Square loop turns dense monster spawns into repeatable progress, while POE currency stays a secondary concern instead of becoming another hideout distraction. The appeal isn't mystery; it's throughput. You enter, find the Abyss path, erase each wave, check the ending reward, and reload. Builds with real screen coverage, movement speed, and dependable recovery get far more from this than slow, boss-focused loadouts. And, because XP loss hurts more the closer you get to 100, a safe 8-mod map you finish cleanly beats a greedier map that sends you back to town.

Why City Square Fits the Grind

POE 3.29 Abyss farming works because City Square gives the encounter room to travel without making you search a sprawling layout. The outer circuit keeps your route readable, so you spend less time guessing where monsters are and more time killing them. Two Multitude Scarabs plus three Abyss Scarabs are the foundation described by current testing, with a focused Atlas setup aimed at extra Abyss monsters and experience. Searing Exarch influence can fit nicely too, provided your build handles altar choices instantly. Don't turn every map into a buffet of mechanics. Breach, Beyond, or Delirium can add density, but only keep them when their spawns die at your normal pace.

Build for Maps per Hour, Not Screenshot DPS

The most common mistake in this POE 3.29 farm is judging a build by tooltip damage rather than by its full map loop. Abyss throws repeated packs, rare monsters, and movement checks at you; burst damage that needs a long setup can feel awful here. At least in my experience, the better build is usually the one that keeps moving while clearing off-screen and recovers from small hits without stopping. Before buying a stack of maps, run a few test City Squares and watch where your seconds disappear.

Do run maps in batches, with scarabs and rolls prepared before the session.
Do keep a strict loot filter that highlights only drops you will actually collect.
Don't force dangerous modifiers just because the pack size looks attractive.
Don't stop to inspect every rare; the next Abyss spawn is usually worth more XP.

Pure XP Versus the Rare-Stacking Route

POE 3.29 offers two different Abyss mindsets: rush experience, or accept a slower loop for stronger loot potential through rare-modifier spreading and Allflame interactions. They are not interchangeable, even if both begin in the same City Square map.

Setup
Best for
What slows it down
Pure Abyss XP
Level 95-100 pushes
Over-looting and deaths
Rare-stacking Abyss
XP plus scarabs and currency
Waiting on modifiers and checking rewards
Choose before you open the map. Pure XP means kill, move, and leave; the hybrid version asks you to pay attention to which rares are worth fighting. From what I've seen, players lose efficiency when they keep switching priorities halfway through a session. The reported 99-to-100 rates around 120 million XP per hour are a useful benchmark, not a promise, because deaths, loading, loot, and map prep all count.

The Detail Most Players Miss

In POE 3.29, the final Abyss reward point is worth a fast check, especially with reports of a Skitterbot chest, but it should never become a full inventory audit. The same rule applies to City Square's central bosses and possible Astrolabe value. Kill them when your single-target damage makes it nearly free; skip them when they break your rhythm. This is the part people rarely admit: the best XP session can look boring. It's supposed to. Consistent repetitions are what protect your progress from bad RNG and tired decision-making.

A Practical POE 3.29 XP Plan

Start with T16 City Square, commit your Atlas passives to Abyss density and experience, then add map-modifier scaling only after your defenses prove stable. Run enough maps to measure an honest hour rather than celebrating one lucky clear. Keep your cursor moving, keep your portal downtime short, and let the farm do one job well. If you also need trade resources, pick up the drops your filter marks and convert the rest of the session into momentum; POE orbs can wait until you're back in the hideout with a completed batch. That's the real strength of Abyss in POE 3.29: simple routing, dense combat, and a grind you can repeat without losing focus.
